This was an efficient and satisfying dinner. It was easy to get 2 nights out of the ingredients, and me and my partner have decent servings. I couldn’t get the flavours quite right for my liking. The first time I cooked it the end result was quite bitter, I think I could have burnt the oil/garlic trying to crisp the tofu in a pan. Second time I used the wok and cooked it all together and didn’t bother trying to crisp the tofu. Cooked the tofu, red onion, and brocolli slowly in 1 tbl sesame oil and 2 tbl of Kecap manis. Added the capsicum, cherry tomatoes, and only 1 large garlic clove when the noodles were cooking. Added 2 tbl of soy and 3/4 tbl of the chilli paste. Adding the cooked noodles in last to coat in the sauces. The result was spicey enough for us and sweeter.

Thank you for sharing your experience, Millie! We're glad you enjoyed the efficiency and found a method that works better for you. Burnt garlic can give an unpleasant aftertaste. Cooking the tofu, red onion, and broccoli slowly with the sauces sounds like a lovely alternative 🙂

This dish is gorgeous 😍 I've tried it with both fresh tomatoes and also tried using half a can of tinned tomatoes when I didn't have any fresh and either way is tasty! I reduce the garlic and use garlic oil instead of regular vegetable oil to get the flavour in a way that's more ibs/ fodmap friendly to share as a tip for anyone else in the same boat who wants to try this!

Hey ! I just made it with Gochujang. I know it's a very old recipe, remember making it few times 4 y ago, using the simple chili sauce with about 5 ingredients (but much sugar, sadly)...
I'd like to know which ingredients have your sambal oelek sauce? so i will try to find it again ;)
I love how satisfying always vegan cuisine is with you.
Your blended oats since a month are my OBSESSION. making it at least 4 times a week, varying raspberries for other berries, replaced your PBJ granola bowl as default ;)
PUL Team - Feb. 19, 2024, 7:06 a.m.
Hey Alice! Glad you enjoyed the recipe. Sambal oelek typically consists of chili peppers, vinegar, and salt. Some varieties may also include garlic or other spices for added flavour. You can often find it in the international section of grocery stores or at specialty international markets. We're also thrilled to hear you enjoyed the blended oats recipe! 😊

I agree with the feedback from Edna. I had a bit of broccoli needing used up as well as some baby plum tomatoes. Also, I used some homemade teriyaki sauce for the tofu instead of ketjap. This will absolutely be on frequent rotation in our home. THANKS PUL TEAM!

I love it that most your one-pot recipes are so flexible! I didn't have noodles so used spaghetti instead. My husband refuses tofu :D so I just used broccoli, red cabbage and red pepper, which made it for a pretty hearty dinner. Garlicky flavour combined with a kick from sambal was just really perfect. And so colourful. Was hoping for some leftovers for lunch tomorrow, but I guess that's not going to happen :D
Really great recipe, ready in 15 minutes - so ideal for a weekday :)

You’re right, this is a flexible recipe! Made it for the first time tonight and it was a hit. I just used what I had on hand and it turned out delicious. I used mushrooms instead of tofu, coconut aminos for the kejap manis and soy sauce because I’m allergic to soy, very thinly sliced Brussels sprouts and carrots, onions instead of shallots and gochujang instead of sambal oelek. I also had Hakka noodles so I used that. Um, okay, maybe totally different ingredients but the process is fantastic and still worked. I did have and use the sesame oil! 😄 Anyway, thanks for sharing!

Hey Rad, thanks for taking the time to share the honest feedback. In case It helps, if the tofu coated in ketjap manis (also known as sweet soy sauce) is exposed to heat for too long the sugar can start to burn which might impact the flavor 😊

So fantastic!!! I came across your page via a random referral from a stranger. Wow, did I ever luck out. I've tried several of your recipes now. I totally love how bold and creative they are... All blending flavors to well. This was the first time I've ever attempted to cook Tofu! Such a cool first for myself and family. I did cut the cubes in 1cm squares and they tasted great but after looking at your photos I wondered if 1cm actually was meant to read 1 inch cubes? Regardless, totally amazing. Thanks for sharing your gift for food! We love it here in Northern Alabama USA.

Hey SW, sending our warmest welcome to the PUL community! We personally like it when the cubes are on the smaller side for the crunch, perhaps a tad closer to 1.5 cm but we rounded down for simplicity 🙂 A larger size is fine too though. Hugs to Northern Alabama 🤗

I just have a question about instant ramen noodles. I was doing a search for them and it seems that there is quite a bit of talk about how unhealthy they are and shouldn't be eaten very often. The concern seems to be about TBHQ, as well as high sodium. Just wondering if it's ever been a concern to you or if you know if some brands might be healthier than others?
PUL Team - May 24, 2022, 1:19 a.m.
Hey Melody. thanks for the kind words and question 🙂 We personally enjoy ramen occasionally for its convenience although some brands are indeed higher in sodium. Plant-based lifestyles including a variety of whole foods generally don’t have excess amounts of sodium in them, so we do enjoy some higher sodium meals occasionally. In case it helps and you're interested, an alternative noodle can be used instead. We hope this helps for now!

Hey Agathe, you can use the smoked tofu if desired. The tofu will be tougher and have a smokier taste as you may imagine. Since it's already smoked it will also need less time to on pan, such as a few minutes only, so you could add it closer to the end of the recipe :)

Do you happen to know where I can buy different firmnesses of tofu in Amsterdam? At the Jumbo and A-H they just have "tofu", no firmness indicated.
PUL Team - Feb. 3, 2022, 1:53 a.m.
Hey Drew! Our team in the Netherlands either uses the one from AH or the one from Amazing Sang Lee. They're both firm, but not "extra firm" as often found in North American grocery stores, so it helps to give the block a good squeeze with your hands to drain any excess liquid. The toko's also tend to carry dessert (soft) tofu. We hope this helps for now 😊

Hey, I just wanted to double-check with you that the nutritional info is accurate for one serving? It says that the recipe makes two servings and one serving has 99 g of carbohydrates and 30 g of protein. Just from looking over the ingredients list, it seems a bit too much to me - is it really the nutritional info for one serving or for the whole recipe?
Also, I love that the nutrition info is hidden at first!
PUL Team - Dec. 28, 2021, 1:54 a.m.
Hey Iyana, thanks for the question and feedback! It's super appreciated to help us improve 🙂 We're gone in and double-checked, and the information appears to be an accurate estimate on our end. Indeed it's provided for two servings as well.
We used approximately 3 packets of noodles in total (so 1.5 packets per serving) for this one which contributes to the bulk of the carbohydrates. The protein is mainly from the tofu, although other ingredients accumulate to provide more protein per serving. We've adjusted things slightly so the overall protein is a tad lower in any case. Kindly note that as the disclaimer mentions, the information provided is just an estimate. Factors such as different products, brands, or portions can impact the nutritional content. If you need specific nutrition information due to a medical condition, please consult with a healthcare professional, such as a dietitian or physician. We hope this helps for now and do let us know if there are any other questions 😃

I love how your site has developed and I find a great pleasure in discovering new tiny features like the cross-out-ingredients-function. You have by far the best Food-Blog I know and thank you for sharing all these amazing recipes. :)

This was really nice! Instead of shallots I used some chopped up leek and also left out the chilli for my daughter. Will definitely make again, thank you 😊

Wow I didn't expect it was THIS good! As a student, I can say that this is a really good option if you are on a budget and do not have much time to cook. Usually, I don't really enjoy tofu, but this tofu is delicious and fits well in the recipe. Thanks!

I'm so glad there's the option swap for gochujang! Here in Japan, Sambal Oelek is (mysteriously) impossible to find. Asking for PUL's expertise here: what is the difference between Sambal, Sambal Kokita, Sambla Oelek? (first two are the only ones found here) Are these interchangeable? I would love to, because it would mean so many PUL's recipes would finally be accessible to me here!
PUL Team - Nov. 11, 2021, 1:25 a.m.
Hi Alica! That's a lovely question. Our understanding is that 'Sambal' refers to a sauce made from chile peppers. The sauce can be made with other ingredients or with different processing (such as with a Mortar and Pestle) which leads to variations, such as Sambal Oelek. Kokita appears to be a brand that sells Sambal, so perhaps the chile peppers are processed in a slightly different way than traditional Sambal Oelek?
Either option should be interchangeable, adding more or less to taste. We hope this helps for now ☺️

Very moreish! Sadly I didn't have any tofu but butter beans were actually really nice in this. Top tip: spaghetti noodles are the perfect texture for fried noodles and they capture flavour really well. Thanks for this recipe.
