Michigan’s largest yard sale trail returns this weekend (2024)

Michigan’s largest yard sale trail is set to return this weekend with events planned in waterfront communities from New Baltimore to Bay City.

The M-29/M-25 Yard Sale Trail invites both seasoned treasure hunters and new adventurers to explore the state’s coastal Thumb. Dozens of sales and events are planned from farmers markets and festivals to concerts and more.

“It’s not just about the finds — it’s about connecting with the heart of Michigan,” organizer Jason Schofield said in this year’s event brochure.

“Beyond the thrill of finding unique bargains, this journey offers a chance to immerse yourself in the vibrant local culture and discover special community events along the way,” he added.

The trail, which officially runs Friday to Sunday, features dozens of stops spanning more than 150 miles. At the southern end of the trail, the sales begin at the New Baltimore Trade Center on 23 Mile Road. The city’s community garage sale is also set to take place Thursday to Saturday at city hall.

Tips and tricks

Trail organizers offered the following tips to help ensure a successful yard sale experience:

• Stay hydrated: The August sun can be intense, so carry a refillable water bottle and drink frequently. Many yard sales might not have access to drinks, so keeping hydrated is crucial.

• Dress for comfort: Opt for lightweight, breathable clothing and comfortable walking shoes. A wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses can also protect you from the sun. Don’t forget sunscreen to avoid sunburn.

• Prepare for snacks: Pack a small cooler or bag with snacks like fruits, nuts and granola bars to keep you energized and prevent you from needing to find food between stops.

• Plan your route: Before heading out, map out the yard sales you want to visit to help maximize your time and reduce backtracking. Check local listings or community boards for updates on sale hours and locations.

• Bring cash: Many yard sales only accept cash, so bring enough to cover your purchases. Small bills and coins are especially useful for quick transactions.

• Stay cool: Keep a small, portable fan or cooling towel in your bag to help you stay comfortable while browsing.
